You’ve seen them around the neighborhood–toddlers on bikes. But their bikes don’t look like the ones you grew up riding. Toddlers aren’t just riding tricycles anymore. Let us here at DadsAgree.com explain the latest trends in toddler bikes and the advantages of each type. We have created a review guide to help your decision on the perfect toddler bike be a little less daunting.

How early can you buy your toddler a bike? If you just can’t wait for your kid to have wheels, there are various ride-on toys available for 1-year-olds. The earliest your child would be ready for most tricycles or balance bikes is at about 18 months. However, we have included one push tricycle that is appropriate for babies from age 9 months. Most toddler bikes last 2-3 years, depending on how quickly your child grows. However, some can adjust from 9 months to age 5.

Types of Toddler Bikes

The latest bicycling wisdom says that you should start your child with a balance bike. The idea is that balancing is the hardest part of cycling for kids to learn. They begin by scooting around on their balance bike like a Flintstone, using their feet to make their bike go. Eventually, they’ll learn to balance on it and yell to you, “Look, Dad! No feet!” Then they’re ready for a real bike or at least a bike with training wheels.

However, the old-fashioned ways to learn to bike (tricycles and training wheels) still exist–with a few modern twists.

Here are five types of bikes to consider for your toddler:

Top Choices For The Right Bike Size

Children’s bikes come in various wheel sizes. To determine which size is right for your child, you should use their height or inseam measurement. This measurement is different from the one you use to measure your pants size. Instead, you should measure the length inside their leg from where the seat would hit their crotch to the floor. We suggest putting a book between your child’s legs to simulate the bicycle seat when you measure.

DAD’S #1 CHOICE
  • Type: Bike with detachable training wheels
  • Wheel Size: 16”
  • Weight Limit: 80 pounds
  • Bike Frame Material: Aluminum
  • Ages: 4-8

Our favorite toddler bike is the Co-op Cycles’ REV 16. We like it because it is high quality and looks like a high-end bike. However, it is available at a lower-end price. This bike has a classic look that will get compliments every time you’re out riding with your child. It comes with plenty of tasteful stickers for your child to use to decorate the bike.

We also like this bike because it holds up well to tag along with Dad on multiple terrains: sidewalk, road, gravel, and dirt trails. The aluminum frame is sturdy and light. It also has coaster brakes that Co-op Cycles makes especially for little hands.

This bike will best accommodate older, taller toddlers. Because it is so well made, your child can pass it along to younger siblings when they outgrow it. It also will not depreciate much in resale value when you finally need it out of your garage.

The PlasmaCar is one of the best ride-on toys on the market. There are imitations and counterfeits, so be careful that you’re getting the real thing. This ride-on toy can be a precursor to using a bike and is appropriate for ages three and up. When we say “and up,” we mean that it can accommodate an adult up to 220 pounds. Since it is well-made, it will last through multiple ages and multiple children.

Your child can either use their feet or put their feet on the running board and wiggle the wheel back and forth to make the PlasmaCar go. The PlasmaCar is simple. It requires no batteries and has no gears nor pedals. It is also appropriate for indoor and outdoor use, although the company suggests not using it on wooden floors.

Unlike some outdoor toys, your child will spend hours rather than minutes getting great exercise with this toy. The PlasmaCar uses the natural forces of gravity, friction, inertia, and centrifugal force to help your child develop coordination, balance, and motor skills. Your child can reach thrilling speeds of up to 6mph with the PlasmaCar. If this is not fast enough, you can upgrade the tires with polyurethane rollerskate wheels to go faster.

The PlasmaCar meets and exceeds all USA, Canadian, and European safety standards. It has also won multiple awards over two decades, including the 2005 Gold Seal Award, 2005 Dr. Toy’s Best Vacation Winner, 2005 TNPC Seal of Approval, 2006 Oppenheim Portfolio Platinum Seal Award, 2007 TDmonthly Top Seller, and the 2016 Totally Awesome Awards Seal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dads have questions. We have answers.

Your toddler isn’t ready for a training wheel bike at age 2. Your 2-year-old should start with a ride-on toy or balance bike to help learn balance. A tricycle with a low center of gravity can also work great for strengthening little leg muscles as they learn to pedal.

It’s not too late to start your 4-year-old on a balance bike or a tricycle. Some 4-year-olds still find the pedal positions on a tricycle easier than the pedal positions on an upright pedal bike. Age 4 is also an excellent time for your pre-K kid to start learning how to use a pedal bike with the help of training wheels.

Every child is different. Some take their training wheels off at 3 or 4, while some aren’t ready until they’re pre-teens. The more they practice their balance, the sooner you can remove the training wheels and help them graduate to a regular pedal bike. We suggest starting your child’s training wheels nearly flush with the floor and then moving them upward as your child becomes more confident. Eventually, they will depend on them less and less.

Many toddler bikes come in unisex styles and colors. Many of them slope in the front, but it’s not to accommodate a dress or because the bicycle is for girls. Instead, the slope makes it easier for a toddler to get onto the bike without hurting themselves.
