Toddlers sure are cute, but having a curious little one around can be a challenge too. Regular furniture isn’t sized for tiny humans, and putting wiggly toddlers on adult-sized chairs can be dangerous.

Having a toddler chair gives your child a perfect spot to call their own. It’s a great idea to get a toddler-sized chair; the question is which one?

Our Toddler Chair Review

There are a ton of kids’ chairs out there, and it’s hard to know which seating solution is best. We scoured the world of children’s furniture to find the best chair overall, as well as the best toddler chair for specific purposes.

Maybe you need chairs and a toddler table so that they can join you at dinner. Or maybe you need a kid’s chair that’s plastic and made for use outdoors. We reviewed both those types and several more.

Untitled design 9

In our review, we focused on chairs that were durable, safe to use, and easy to clean. Stain-resistant or easy to wipe down is ideal when it comes to kids. And, of course, safety is a priority with any play product.

Size is an important factor to consider in buying children’s chairs too. Our review features chairs for a range of toddler ages and a few that will work nicely for older siblings too.

Kids tend to take over homes with toys and tools, so storage is a feature we paid attention to as well. Sometimes it’s nice to have a chair that will blend in with your living room decor. Others may prefer a chair they can easily store away when company comes over.

The 6 Best Toddler Chairs

Now you know what we were looking for: it’s time to dive into the world of kids’ furniture. Our review provides a rating for each choice as well as an in-depth breakdown of each product.

We also include a buyers guide and FAQ section at the bottom of this article. That should help you navigate the wide world of kids chairs, so you get one that fits your family best.

So, without any further ado, let’s take a look at the toddler chairs on our menu, starting with the best overall.

The best toddler chair has to be kid and parent-approved. This one’s exactly that. It’s sturdy and low to the ground, so kids as young as 18 months can get into it without assistance.

That said, this chair should be placed against a wall or on a soft floor. If kids decide to climb on its back, it may tip over, as any chair of this style could.

The Marshmallow Furniture Toddler Chair is made with easy cleaning and use in mind. Unlike other kids chairs that can only be wiped down, this chair features a completely removable, stain-resistant, fabric cover for extra-easy cleaning.

This kids seat is available in various recognizable character options that your child is sure to love. Simba, the Hulk, and Hello Kitty are amongst the back design options.

The foam seat is incredibly comfortable as well as lightweight, but it can handle heavy kid use and play. With a 100 lb weight capacity, older and larger kids are unlikely to damage it.

The only downside we see with this kids chair is the overall aesthetic. A loose, fabric cover means the chair looks less tailored. It’s fine in a nursery or play space but might look a little sloppy next to adult decor.

If you want your child to join you at the table, this hook-on chair makes perfect seating. It’s a step up from the typical high-chair because it hooks on to your table top rather than providing a stand-alone tray and cup holder.

Parents might be skeptical at first sight. A hook-on chair doesn’t sound sturdy or safe, but in this chair, your child isn’t going anywhere.

This kids chair is for one year olds and up. It has straps and latches firmly to the side of any existing table. The harness keeps kids locked in, no matter how much they squirm. And the soft material design is perfect for sensitive legs and arms.

The back is surprisingly supportive given that the material pieces are machine washable and removable. The color is a nice neutral gray and it folds flat for travel and storage.

While this is best for younger children, it holds up to 37 lbs and should be effective for up to 36 months old. That said, the seat is made from a  thin fabric piece and will wear out with washing and use.

Busy children need to be entertained. Having a table means activity space for reading, coloring and all kinds of play!

This toddler chair is wooden and the table set has a natural finish, so it looks nice in any room. It’s sturdy and should last a long time, as parents expect from a popular brand like Melissa and Doug.

The seats are low to the ground, and most kids around two years old will find their feet touch the floor. This means it may not work great if older children try to join.

Though the set includes two chairs, the table top itself is pretty tiny. There’s not much room for more than a few markers and a sheet to color on. Trying to serve more than one child at this table would be hard.

This set also requires some assembly. You’ll need a screwdriver to put it’s legs and top together. Luckily it’s only a couple sets of screws, which is minimal when it comes to furniture.

When it comes to outdoor chairs, the Little Tikes Garden Chair is a perfect pick. These come in a set of four chairs that are lightweight and stackable for off-season storage.

These kids chairs are plastic and easy to clean by simply wiping down. They have wide and sturdy legs, so they won’t tip when kids decide to climb into it. They also have wide armrests, though it doesn’t have a cup holder.

The seats are very narrow, and older toddlers may not fit in them. This chair is designed for two-year-olds, but kids ages 3-4 might be too big.

They come in a variety of colors like red, pink, and lime green, so you can match your other garden decor or let your kids pick their favorite.

We should also note, the little tykes brand is recognizable and affordable. However, garden chairs like these may be available in-season under store brand names at even less expensive prices.

Though your child may outgrow these chairs quickly, they are durable and can be left outside all summer long.

If you have kids in the house, you probably feel like the toys are never ending. You might be tired of the endless toy clutter, especially when stuffed animals litter the floor.

This kid’s cotton bean bag chair cover is your solution. It’s made for stuffing with all your child’s soft toys, and once filled, it becomes the perfect toddler seat!

The cover is durable, 100% cotton, quick to clean, and comes in a variety of color patterns. The zipper is kid-friendly, too, so children can easily put their own toys away without assistance.

The chair fits somewhere from 30-50 stuffed animals, depending on the toys. Of course, you’ll only want to fill them with soft toys, or else the seat could end up a little uncomfortable.

We have to admit this chair isn’t a true bean-bag, though that might be a good thing. Anyone who’s ever had a bean bag break open knows those beans aren’t safe for kids.

When you want a comfortable space for your child to enjoy a tablet or picture book, the Costzon kid’s sofa is our favorite.

This chair is designed with comfort and spine-health in mind. It’s a sturdy, wood frame upholstered sofa that can be wiped down easily.

It comes in a variety of fun patterns and shapes with lots of bright color. One version looks like a baseball glove, and another is a pink throne fit for a princess.

Depending on the shape you choose, this chair will last well into the future. Some models are made to accommodate a child from one to 5 years old and can hold up to 110 lbs.

The only downside may be the price. This chair is a bit more of an investment. Given its durability and comfortable style, though, we give this sofa 9.6/10.

Buying Guide

When buying a chair for a kid, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. You want to find a chair that’s designed to be sturdy and safe. You’ll also want one that wipes down easily and is attractive.

kids chair

Here we’ll take a closer look at what you need to pay attention to when buying a kids chair.

Construction

At two or three years old, a child is busy and curious; they also tend to like to climb. This means sturdy construction is a must.

Wood or solid plastic frames are ideal. You can also look for children’s chairs that are designed so that they won’t tip. Alternatively look for soft chairs, like bean bags, that can’t tip and sit directly on the floor.

Safety

Safety is an important component whenever you’re shopping for a child. If the chair’s not close to the ground, a safety harness is a must.

Watch out for chairs designed with a high back, narrow base, or tall legs.  They’re more likely to tip when climbed on.

Also, beware of true bean bag chairs. There’s nothing wrong with them unless they break open. The beans tend to end up in young children’s mouths which can be a choking hazard.

Safety

Material

Fabric that’s simple to clean and durable is important too. If it can’t be spot cleaned or thrown in the wash, it’s a no-go.

Look for polyester,  cotton, or another strong fabric on upholstered chairs. For tables and hard chairs, plastic or wood is best.  If it’s wood make sure the finish is made for heavy usage. Small children aren’t exactly gentle with their toys.

Pattern

Of course, it’s important that little kids like the chair too. Bright colors, fun patterns, and recognizable characters all make a chair more enticing to your children.

That said,  bright blue seating might not fit your more adult decor. In that case, look for a product that’s upholstered in neutral colors or something with a wood finish, like the Melissa and Doug table above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Now that you know what to look for let’s help answer a few frequently asked questions

The size of the chair you need depends on the size of a child, but in general, the chair's seat should be no higher than 12 inches off the ground. Most little kids chairs have a seat that's 10 inches off the ground or less.

Little kid's chair backs aren't standardized and will vary from style to style. If the chair has armrests, they should be thick and broad. Remember, your child will likely want to climb on them.

As soon as your child can sit up on their own, they can sit in a  kids chair. For most children, this occurs between 20 and 24 months.

If a chair's uncomfortable, your toddler won't want to sit in it. Foam cushions are great and a solid frame provides spine support. Cotton or polyester covers create a soft surface.

Dads Agree

Toddlerhood is a time of growth and curiosity; a time when it’s hard to sit still. Having a spot all their own makes things like reading or tablet-learning more fun for little kids. That means buying a toddler chair that fits your space is a great idea. We hope this review helped you decide which one to get!
